words kill, words give life

4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days

I watched this movie today. It follows two college roommates in 1987 Romania looking to procure and illegal abortion. I could say it was powerful, but that wouldn’t be the half of it. It stretched my definition of love and made me question what I would and wouldn’t do for my friends.

It’s not a perfect film. At times the momentum would lag, but the suspense that built later in the movie more than made up for it. By the end, I was transfixed by the screen and desperately hugging my pillow. It’s in Romanian, so unless you speak the language, you’ll be reading subtitles. The fact that it wasn’t in English helped me focus on the film, because I could not look away from the screen and know what was going on. And this is a film that deserves your complete attention.

I came to care immensely for the characters. When it was over, I wanted to know more about them and how their lives would proceed. This movie was intended to be the first in a trilogy. If the other two films are made, I will definitely go see them.
